I’ve been a stay at home mom for 6 years, and I’ve often had discouraging thoughts. When the Lord revealed some deep truths to me, my whole demeanor changed in regards to being a stay-at-home mom. If you are a stay-at-home mom, have you ever had any of these thoughts?

* Who am I? I’m ONLY a stay-at-home mom.

* I feel useless in ministry because my kids consume my time.

* I'm so disconnected from the world

* My prayer time is limited with all the motherhood work I’m doing.

* I feel like I have to go back to work because we REALLY need the extra money.

Well momma, I have a word for you. You are NOT just a stay-at-home mom. You have an extremely high value in God’s sight! You set the spiritual tone in your home; you are responsible for teaching your children spiritual truths among many other things you teach your children; you are responsible for physically and spiritually protecting your family; and you have the kind of spirit that easily connects with God’s Spirit. The prayers for your family have so much value! I’ll explain more.

One day, I had a tough day and I really desired to drop everything so I could spend time with the Lord. Because of my motherhood responsibilities, I had no time for one-on-one time with my Heavenly Father. In the midst of my discouragement, I heard God speak to me during my motherhood duties. He said, “But I am here raising them with you.”

Isn’t that incredible?! The God who made the heavens and the earth, put the stars in their places, formed me while in my mother’s womb, and adopted me into his kingdom desires to raise my children WITH me!! We tend to forget God is also a Father. He KNOWS how to raise children; he’s got plenty of experience, ya know?

The Lord revealed more motherhood truths to me! To get to those motherhood truths, we have to look at a basic truth. God’s desire for mankind is to restore us to PRE-FALL maturity. This means, he desires to heal us, restore us, redeem us, save us, and reconcile us unto himself to have the same relationship than he did with Adam and Eve before they disobeyed. So what is God restoring us to exactly? To know more details, we look at Genesis 2 to discover what God’s desire for man and woman before they disobeyed God.

Verse 15 shows us “The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” This was Adam’s worship, to work and take care of the Garden of Eden. In verse 17, God commands Adam to NOT eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Interestingly enough, soon after God tells Adam to NOT eat from the tree, he says in verse 18, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

Look at the word “helper.” Is this a physical helper to aid Adam’s efforts to work and care for the Garden? NOPE! The Hebrew word for “helper” is the same Hebrew word in the Psalms when David says, “The Lord is my HELPER.” Interesting!! Do you think God knew Adam would disobey, and desired to create a spiritual helper? If so, this means YOU as a wife and a mom is the SPIRUTAL HELPER of the family, and a SUITABLE one at that. Do you see your value yet? There’s more!!!!

While Adam’s worship was to work and care for the Garden, Eve’s worship was raising and teaching their children as well as being the spiritual helper of the family. So being a stay-at-home mom IS an act of worship!!! As you parent and teach your children in the ways of the Lord, you are also preparing your children for a more devoted walk with the Lord! How awesome is that!!!!

If you are a single mother, your value does not diminish here whatsoever! Your willingness to teach your children in the way they should go is still an act of worship. It’s the love we have for God that Father that motivates us to see our role in his kingdom with high value. Since the Lord sees your heart, he knows your motives. If your motives are pure to raise your children in His ways, he’ll take care of your needs.

If you are a male reading this post, your value in God’s kingdom is not diminished here either. Your acts of worship are just as valuable as a woman’s. There’s so much to add for a dad’s value to the family. Since the intention of this blog post is to encourage stay-at-home moms, I hope you’ll receive insight into how to encourage the women around you.

If you would like to read about more of your value in God’s kingdom, check out these books. Both are written by Rabbi Shalom Arush. Although these books are Jewish in nature, the author does a GREAT job expressing God’s design for men and women. Christians and non-Christians alike will benefit from these books. (Note: The books are gender specific for good reason. Do not read the book of the opposite gender. Doing this will prevent expectations and judgment of the opposite gender.)

For women: Women's Wisdom: The Garden of Peace for Women

For men: The Garden of Peace: A Marital Guide for Men Only

So be encouraged, stay-at-home mom and strong woman of faith! The Lord sees how you care for your children. He sees your struggles, he sees your tears, he sees your motives to devote your children to Him, so he’ll raise your children with you as you walk in his ways and teach your children to also walk in his ways! You are BLESSED to have the God of creation in your home with you!

REVIEW: "Hymns & Sacred Songs" by Leigh Nash

Leigh Nash fans are in for a treat! After 5 years, she is releasing her first solo album, Hymns & Sacred Songs on November 15, 2011. For those who are unfamiliar with Leigh Nash, she is the lead voice of Sixpence None the Richer. Hits like "Kiss Me" (1997) and "Breathe Your Name" (2002) made Sixpence a mainstay in American pop culture. When asked to record an album of hymns with Kingsway, Nash jumped at the opportunity. Hymns & Sacred Songs holds a special value to Nash, and she graciously shared her thoughts with The Worship Community.

**********
How did this project come about?
I was asked if I'd be interested in making a hymns record and flipped! I've always wanted to do this and am so grateful for the opportunity!

How did you come to decide which hymns to use?
John Hartley, who produced the record, did much of the song selecting. He did a beautiful job I might add. I contributed to the writing of several, and I selected those by looking through an old hymnal and finding words I was particularly moved by.

What brought on the decision to write new melodies as opposed to using the traditional ones?
I really love the idea of bringing new life into these beautiful words. They're timeless, but sometimes melodies can get a bit stale and it's hard to be as inspired by them. These new melodies are beautiful and I feel they breathe new life into these sacred words.

Which hymn(s)/song(s) mean the most to you in this project and why?
I love "O Heart Bereaved and Lonely" - this song resonates with me the most because it so adeptly describes feeling discouraged and broken. It is a common human emotion and I think this song says so beautifully in words not to be discouraged because Jesus know all - we are not alone. Such a comforting song. I also really love "The Power of the Cross." It's such a powerful song - I had chills while singing it.

What are your hopes as a result of this project?
I pray that people are encoruaged and lifted by this music.

**********
In familiar Sixpence fashion, Nash brings some bluegrass and folk in Hymns & Sacred Songs to some memorable hymns by Fanny J. Crosby, Charles Wesley and others. The collaboration in this project really impresses me. This collection contains songs from unknown lyricists, Nashville worship leaders, independent songwriters, etc. You'll see what I mean as I share the song-by-song breakdown:

Savior, Like A Shepherd, attributed to Dorothy A. Thrupp in 1836, was musically arranged by Brian Ortize and Season 9 American Idol finalist Katelyn Clampett. It starts off the album with a sweet upbeat bluegrass style. The banjo adds such a nice touch to the dynamic of the song, and Nash’s voice makes it all the more sweet. The melody is new. So, it brings a fresh arrangement to the classic.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing is a VERY well done adaptation of the original. The melody is fresh in keeping with the original 1758 lyrics by Robert Robinson. The new melody, arranged by Leigh Nash, Chris Eaton, and John Hartley, is written in a minor key, which breathes new life into it. Since I’m a sucker for minor, I was immediately drawn into the melody. Adding a light “music box” feel to the beautifully crafted lyrics, I’m a new fan of this old hymn. I highly recommend the arrangement for worship music libraries.

Isaiah 55 (Nothing You Can’t Do) is a new song written by singer/songwriter/worship leader Katie Gustafson. It’s a great melody inviting everyone to the goodness of Jesus in the verses, adoration of God in the chorus, and exaltation of the Lord in the bridge. Nash brings a light rock style to this modern hymn, and introduces Gustafson through this project.

O Heart Bereaved And Lonely is one of 8000 hymns written by Fanny J. Crosby. It’s a great hymn encouraging those who have been broken to trust in the Savior who “knows it all.” Leigh Nash, Chris Eaton, and John Hartley arranged the melody and accompaniment to a 6/8 light rock flavor. Lyrically, it’s a great song to add to a set list when needing to encourage those among you that in all our trials, we can still trust the Savior to see us through. Musically, it’s a tender minor melody that expresses the bereaved believer calling out to the Savior like what we would find in a lament.

The Power of the Cross is a new hymn from Keith Getty and Stuart Townsend. This song gave me chills when I first heard it. As the title suggests, Getty and Townsend go back to the cross at Calvary and wrote around its theology in worship. “Ever bitter thought, every evil deed crowning your blood stained brow” and “we stand forgiven at the cross” bring that theology to life in a powerful way. Musically speaking, it’s an easy listening song, but the lyrics make it more powerful than one may anticipate. This makes a great teaching song when adding to a set list.

Give Myself to You is a new song from an unknown lyricist. Nashville worship leader Savannah Ellis originally wrote the music, and Nash introduces it through this project. It’s a light rock worship song that expresses the thankfulness of what Jesus did on the cross.

Come Ye Thankful People Come is a great song of thankfulness. Want a song around Thanksgiving? This would make a great addition to a set list in that season. Henry Alford originally wrote it in 1844, whereas Leigh Nash arranges the melody. The style of the song seems like a soft march with a light banjo mixed in. It’s a great folk-style song to add to any music library.

Blessed Redeemer is another Fanny Crosby classic hymn in this project. Written between 1820 and 1915, Crosby brings Christ’s character to the forefront. Chris McClarney, Chris Eaton, and John Hartley arranged this hymn with a 6/8 folk style. The melody is fresh, which allows a modern dynamic using electric guitar power chords. As with many of Crosby’s hymns, it’s a great song to add to a Sunday set list.

Out of My Bondage (Jesus, I Come) was written in 1887 by William T. Sleeper. Leigh Nash brings a light melodic 6/8 folk style to the arrangement. This is a great song of freedom, coming from bondages of fear, despair, discontent, sickness, and need to everything that only Jesus provides like freedom, gladness, love, health and wealth. It’s a must-add to any music library.

Song of Moses was recently recorded by Aaron Keyes. He provides a great history of the song on his website. I like how the banjo is used in this song. It doesn’t sound bluegrass, but it has a folk flavor that is so fitting for Nash’s voice. Congregations have already used this song in their set lists, but this arrangement may work great with female vocals with a folk-ish texture.

Praise The Lord Who Reigns Above is a great 1743 hymn from well-known theologian Charles Wesley. The song was originally written in a 4/4 time signature, whereas Chris Eaton and John Hartley arranged the melody to a 6/8 time, arranged the dynamics to a light rock style, and added a new chorus. The chorus is powerful and works very well with the new melody. I highly recommend adding this song to every music library. It’s a great adaptation of the original.

Be Still My Soul brings a slow bluegrass style into the project mix. It was originally written in German by Katharina A. von Schlegel in 1752, and then translated to English by Jane L. Borthwick in 1855. Chris Eaton, John Hartley and KatieGustafson arranged a new melody. It’s a great song in a minor key that brings a tender lament feel to the dynamic. This is also a great song to add to a music library.

Since most of these songs are well-known hymns, the lyrics simply need admiring (as opposed to critiquing). It’s refreshing to hear some of these popular hymns to new melodies because as Nash stated in her interview, it brings freshness to melodies that may have become stale over the centuries. Hymns & Sacred Songs is an extraordinary fusion of old and new. Using any of these songs as part of a music library would help bridge the gap between generations. Well done, Leigh Nash and Kingsway, well done!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://worshipvanguard.blogspot.com/2011/11/review-hymns-sacred-songs-by-leigh-nash_07.html' title='REVIEW: "Hymns & When I say “accessible,” I mean they write music that most musicians can pick up, learn, and sing/play in their local congregations. Melodies are catchy, vocal range is accessible, melodic intervals are manageable, and the instrumental dynamics allow for other arrangements. My Soul Yearns continues Vineyard’s focus of bringing music for the church by the church. According to their website, this album “is an authentic expression of how God is moving with Holy power through the Vineyard UK & Ireland movement where worship is one of its cornerstones.”

My Soul Yearns features 4 worship leaders, each leading 3 songs at the 2011 Vineyard National Leaders Conference. Carly Billingham, Dave Miller, Samuel Lane and Joe Blustin bring Vineyard UK’s passion for Jesus Christ from UK/Ireland to the US. Here is a song-by-song breakdown of this 12-song live album:

1. My Soul Yearns opens with a prayer to “galvanize us by the power of your Spirit to make a mark on this land” and a spontaneous worship moment. It’s a cry of love to Jesus expressing that we belong to him and our souls yearn for him. Samuel Lane leads this powerful worship song expressing the love of God and the reason we worship him. It starts off slow but builds to a powerful chorus when the drums and guitars kick in. This title track sums up the rest of the album. We long for his Sprit to do the work in us first so we are empowered to go out into the world.

2. Hear the Sound starts with a light upbeat rhythm that builds to a strong chorus. It’s definitely a praise and worship song – recognizing the holiness of God giving him “glory and honor, thanks and praise.” The dynamics add to the cries of the believer’s heart to hear the sound of our worship. Led by Dave Miller, the melody is very singable for most vocalists, and can easily fit with various styles depending on the dynamics of the local worship team.

3. Love Rain Down gets to the heart of the motivation of our “mission.” We cannot and should not go out until we are filled with the Holy Spirit. We cannot give Christ’s love away until we are filled with his love ourselves. It’s a great way of poetically expressing the greatest commandment overflowing to love for our neighbors. “This is our prayer that your love and your power would come like an ancient day, so your word will be heard and history is made as lives are changed” beautifully expresses the Great Commission. The chorus (“Love rain down, fill us up and send us out to the cities and towns, one by one to see your kingdom come”) then expresses the need to be filled with the Spirit before being “sent out.” Carly Billingham’s voice adds to the purity and innocence of the song. I highly recommend adding this song to your music library.

4. Jesus Name speaks of the beauty and wonder of the name of Jesus. Joe Blustin leads this song with a richness of worship. It’s a great worship song, good range, easy melody to learn, and great dynamics. There is an ebb and flow to the worship going from a smooth flow in the verses to a strong chorus.

5. The Lamb Has Conquered is an anthem-like song that celebrates the work of the cross. It starts off kind of soft but it picks up to a strong chorus. There is a section of the song that’s only drums and vocals, making it sound like a march to the drums. In essence, this song expresses the Gospel, including the coming kingdom. Dave Miller leads this powerful song. It’s wonderful. I highly recommend this song for a Sunday set list.

6. Lift Up His Name (Part 1) is a short “spontaneous worship” time. While the music is playing, people sing as they feel led by the Spirit. For those who are unfamiliar with spontaneous worship, the congregation sings their personal praises to the Lord while the band plays simple chords and leads. Vineyard has been doing this for decades, and many worship teams have emulated their desire to allow people to sing their hearts while the band eases back. This portion of the song is only 1:05 in length, so it’s a pretty good feel for how spontaneous worship sounds.

7. Adore Him is a ballad that includes a bunch of theology. It takes what we know to be true of God and puts them in a teachable song yet it also includes a chorus that encourages others to adore the Father because we know these things to be true. Using Romans 3, Colossians 3, Ephesians 3 and Psalm 119, Samuel Lane leads this worship song expressing our desire to come adore him by singing “To our God, To our Father, Be the glory, forever and ever.”

8. Sweetly Broken is a great song of surrender and redemption. “At the cross you beckon me, you draw me gently to my knees, and I am lost for words, so lost in love, I’m sweetly broken, holy surrendered” beautifully expresses the heart of the believer. Since Christ’s love pursues us, we’re brought to the beautiful brokenness as we follow his ways. Joe Blustin leads this great worship song. I highly recommend this for congregational worship.

9. Lift Up His Name (Part 2) continues the spontaneous worship from Part 1 into a song called “I Will Worship You.” It’s a good song of surrender and a cry of worship. Spontaneous worship songs are difficult to make recommendations for set lists because of their nature. As with most worship songs, I encourage worship teams to allow their creativity to come out when arranging worship songs. As long as the lyrics connect with the team and the congregation, go for it.

10. I Respond is a song of response to the cross. It’s pretty straightforward of a “sinner” recognizing what Jesus did on the cross, and “I respond to your invitation.” It has standard theological lyrics using phrases like “Wash me white as snow” and “you died on the cross.” It may make a good song during an alter call. Carly Billingham leads this beautiful worship song.

11. Jesus, You Reign honors Jesus as our king. It is a great song to lead into a spontaneous worship time with a good range for vocalists and easy melody for congregations to learn. Joe Blustin leads this song with the music starting off soft yet dissonant, and clears to a worshipful chorus.

12. You Are is a ballad that recognizes Jesus for who he is with lyrics like “You are the risen one who died to save … You are my God.” It also expresses a willingness to hand over our lives to the Savior with lyrics like “You breathe new life into these dry bones again.” Since it’s a piano-driven song, both traditional and contemporary worship services can use this song to express how Christ refreshes us when his presence is near us. Carly Billingham leads this worship song.

Most of the songs in this album I would consider more “adult contemporary” or “easy listening” compared to other modern worship artists. All the songs have melodies that are easy to sing along since the vocal ranges are obtainable by most vocalists. Vineyard has a reputation of writing songs that are easy to sing and easy to arrange for most worship teams. Every song in My Soul Yearns makes a great addition to a worship team’s library and I highly recommend downloading this album to add to your music library. It has theology, poetry, and beauty. Enjoy!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://worshipvanguard.blogspot.com/2011/10/review-my-soul-yearns-by-vineyard-uk.html' title='REVIEW: "My Soul Yearns" text-align: center;">
Let’s ask my friend, Randall. Back in September 2010, he began displaying definitive symptoms that something was terribly wrong. On February 8, 2011, he was officially diagnosed with having Glioblastoma Multiforme, an aggressive form of brain tumor. Prognoses for this type of brain tumor are not good. The median survival time is 14 months. Even if treatment works well, 1-in-4 survives past a year. When Randall was diagnosed, the medical doctors immediately set him up for surgery to attempt removal of the tumor. When the surgeons went in, they found the tumor was larger than what they measured on the scan; it was the size of a softball; one doctor called it “a whopper.” The tumor also crossed to the other side of the brain (called a midline shift), and he also had brain stem compression and hydrocephalus (water on the brain). Because of the severity of the tumor, the surgeons could only remove half of the tumor, and gave him 12 months to live.

Tumor the size of a softball; photo used by permission.

So what do you do when medical experts give you only 12 months to live?? Like many people, Randall and his wife started praying. The morning after the diagnosis, Randall had a dream that he was in Heaven with God. God told him it was not yet his time, and that the tumor did not come from him. The cancer is a work of the enemy trying to kill him off because of the calling God has for Randall’s life. [We also have to remember that nothing happens on earth, good or bad, without God allowing it to happen. It’s called sovereignty.] Others started praying with him. Eight pastors visited him in the hospital. Many laid hands on him, anointed him with oil, and prayed for God to miraculously heal him. When he came home from surgery, many from his local church brought meals for the family and prayed in their home. The only thing that was prayed by all these people was healing “in the name of Jesus.”

Can healing occur outside the name of Jesus? Perhaps, but on May 26, 2011, the brain scan reveled the “whopper” tumor was GONE! There was no midline shift, no water on the brain, and NO TUMOR! It IS a medical miracle. Even the doctors called it a miracle short of giving God the glory. Three months later, Randall had another scan. The tumor is still gone, and his brain looked healthier than the previous scan!

<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; photo used by permission.

Does God still heal today? According to Randall, YES! According to the Bible, let’s look into this a bit more. Psalm 103:2-5 (NASB) says,

“Bless the LORD, O my soul,

And forget none of His benefits;

Who pardons all your iniquities,

Who heals all your diseases;

Who redeems your life from the pit,

Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;

Who satisfies your years with good things,

So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.”

The same God who healed in the Bible is the same God who heals today. No disease is too complicated for him to heal. No sin is too great for him to forgive. He expresses his deep love for humanity by physically, emotionally, and spiritually restoring them unto himself. He shows no favoritism. Anyone can call on his name, and seek his healing and deliverance. Isaiah 53:5 (NIV) says, “But he [Jesus] was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are HEALED.” The Hebrew word for healed in this verse is Rapa, which means “make fresh, complete, whole.” When God heals, he goes all the way. Another name for God is Jehovah Rapha, “the Lord who heals.” So biblically speaking, we should believe in miraculous healing because God’s character includes "healer."

Also, we look at the life of Jesus. Miraculous healing was a sign to everyone that the Kingdom of God was there. Jesus even told his opponents in John 10:37-38 (NIV), “Do not believe me unless I do the works [miracles] of my Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works [miracles], that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” Essentially, Jesus was saying that the miraculous healing they witnessed is a testimony that God and Jesus [Father and Son] are one. What does that say about us? If we heal the same as Jesus, is it a sign that we are also one with God the Father? If so, does it fulfill Jesus' prayer in the Garden of Gethsemene that we would be one with him and the Father? I say, YES!!! Ask God to reveal his kingdom to us! Ask him for his kingdom come and his will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. When we do, we’ll see more signs and wonders than we would expect to count. So ask!

Whenever I hear people say, “Well, if it’s God’s will, he will heal.” All I want to say in response to that is, “God’s desire is the restore people to himself. So, it IS his will to heal. Ask away!!!” We would not be asking God for any “special favors” when we ask for healing. It’s his nature to heal, it’s his desire to heal, and it’s his passion to heal. He does this everyday. It should be a privilege to ask God for healing because we get to see his mighty works with our own eyes! We would not be asking him to do something he’s never done before. So ask!!!!

My friends, Randall and Michelle; photo used by permission

Randall is one of many testimonies to the goodness and loving nature of God the Father! Does this mean we can stop praying for Randall? By no means! We continue to pray for more completeness in his healing. Even though the tumor is gone, he still has difficulty in his mobility. Plus, the doctors still maintain that the tumor may come back. Every three months, Randall is required to have a brain scan to ensure the tumor does not return. So, we continue to pray for Randall’s healing so “his youth is renewed like the eagle.”

If you know someone who needs miraculous healing, be free to ask the Lord who heals. He may surprise you with how he reveals his deep love for them. Seek out those who have a strong faith in the healing nature of God, and surround yourself with those people. They may surprise you with how much they love the Lord and how much they love people.

God still heals TODAY. So, I’ll say it again. ASK!

Review: "Boldly Close" by Radiant Worship

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; maintains their desire to “encounter the Presence of God through passionate, modern worship music.” (The quote is from their website, RadiantWorship.com) Radiant Worship is a team of musicians with International House of Prayer in Kansas City, MO, led by Richy Clark. They also have teams of intercessors and messengers who bring the presence of God to their gatherings. To do this, they must encounter God themselves. Boldly Close is an example of their encounters with God as they lead others to encounter the same God that comes close to them. This recording is live, so there is a dynamic of audience participation. Boldly Close will be released to iTunes on October 1, 2011, and this music is well worth the downloads.

For a more thorough review, here is a breakdown of each song:

** Lift The Veil **

I love how the songwriters use the elements of the temple to express how we should approach God. The temple veil was torn in two so all can come and behold his glory. When we see his glory, we also see our sinful nature and desire to rid ourselves of the sin in our lives to receive the glory he has prepared for us. Musically, this starts off soft and builds to a powerful chorus. Later on in the song, the chorus backs down into a gentle manner to allow the stillness of God’s presence, and then the song fades to the next one. I’m a little stuck on the line “You’re countenance making new all that beholds your glory.” If I understand the songwriters’ intent here, they are expressing how God desires to make us new, and more like Him. Overall, it’s a great and powerful song with deep and rich meaning to those who understand how the temple’s design in the Old Testament is a model for our prayer and our reverence for a holy God. It would make a great addition to a Sunday setlist.

** You Are The Christ **

This is a confession to the identity of Jesus as the Messiah. The words are directly from the conversation between Jesus and Peter, and are applied to our response to Jesus upon recognizing who He is. My favorite line in the song is “He’s given the keys of the Kingdom to the Church.” As the Church, I’m always reminded we have the keys to unlock/release the Kingdom into this earth. The song is a powerfully moving song with a driving beat. It has some great guitar riffs and bass lines to add to the dynamic. Overall, it’s a great song to add to a set list, especially expressing it as a creed of who Jesus is and how we see him.

** Unto You **

I like how the songwriters use the word “consecrate.” For those who need a definition, it means to make or declare sacred. Many modern songs avoid words that seem too “churchy.” So, it’s refreshing to know songwriters are willing to reuse such words in worship songs to express the need to set ourselves apart for the Lord’s kingdom. I only have one issue with the song, though. The most memorable melody in the song is “Whoa.” It’s catchier than the verse and the chorus. So to me, the “Whoa” does not sound like an accent to the song but another section of the song. People normally walk away remembering melodic lines the best. So I wonder if people will remember “Whoa” more than the other lyrics, which are very beautiful.

** We Lift Our Voice **

This is a great worship song. It expresses the heart of people willing to meet with God, and they come into his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. For those who understand the structure of the Old Testament temple, it has some deep and rich meaning. Musically, I love the bass in this song, and how much it pumps through the song. The song has a driving beat that is consistent throughout the song. It would make a great song to addition to a Sunday Set List.

** The Real Fire (Prayer) **

I actually like this a lot because it’s just music with the lead worshiper praying. I’ve come to appreciate songs that simply speak/sing a prayer because there is no pressure to make words rhyme or sing in a particular pattern. I like how the lead worshiper encourages the crowd to seek God for the “real fire” and give us more than just the religion we practice. We need God to be real with us, and we certainly need his “real fire.” It’s a great example for a worship team when it comes to prophetic soaking music. Since this type of song cannot be used in a set list, I would recommend teams to allow the Holy Spirit to speak through the music they play and sing.

** The Highest **

This is another great song of worship. It gives all glory and honor to Jesus expressing that no other name deserves that much praise. The 6/8 time signature, and ebbs and flows in tempo allow the song to breathe. There are moments in the song that soften up for a more intimate feel, and other moments that are driving and strong. I like how the musicians work with the different dynamics of the song, and highly recommend this song for a worship set list.

** Boldly Close **

This is another 6/8 time signature with a few ebbs and flows between intimate moments and declarative moments. The chorus is pretty powerful, “I'm coming boldly close to You; I'm not afraid 'cause You've asked me to; I'm bringing all my emptiness; To be satisfied in Your likeness.” It’s certainly a song that can be used in a corporate setting.

** You Are Holy (Isaiah 6) **

Using the words of Isaiah, the worshipers connect with Isaiah’s response to seeing God in his manifest glory. While the verses are Isaiah’s response to what he saw, the chorus focuses on the adoration of the Lord by the Seraphim. The chorus is very powerful, and would make for a great addition to a set list.

** The Good Part **

I find it refreshing to hear songs that express the value of resting in God’s presence and waiting on Him. I wondered why the songwriters chose rest as “the good part” but then I remembered the story of Mary and Martha. When Martha complained that Mary was not doing enough work around the house, Jesus said that Mary chose the better one. With that said, may we always choose resting in the Lord’s presence over getting so much kingdom “work” done as if our labor is more pleasing to God than being in his presence. I love how the song expresses that God is not always in the earthquake or the wind or the works we do. He’s not always in the praise song or our pain, and he sometimes asks us to lie down and wait for him. I recommend this song for sets that want to express waiting on the Lord and hearing his voice.

** Jesus, I Surrender **

This is a pretty straight-forward song. It’s trusting in the words Jesus spoke about following him. There will be trials, joy, and suffering. We must give up our rights, and take up our cross. Jesus also promised we would never be alone. So trusting in his words, there is surrender to his ways. The song has a slow to moderate tempo with an ebb and flow of dynamics. In an intimate worship setting, I would recommend this for a Sunday set list.

** We Will Not Be Moved **

This is such a driving song from beginning to end! The guitar riff is awesome. There is a strong declaration that “we will not be moved” even if the mountains crumble to the sea, or the waters rise above us. As much as I love the lyrics, there seems to be a disconnection of who the singers are singing to between the verse and the chorus. The verse seems to be a group battle cry, and the chorus expresses how wonderful God is and how beautiful the things he makes are. Maybe the song is expressing that because God is so wonderful that we will not be moved, but again that connection is not really clear. Other than that, it’s a great and powerful song, and I would recommend it for set lists as long as the lead worshiper somehow visually makes that connection.

** The Worthy Selah (Improv) **

I kind of like this because this is what prophetic soaking music does. These songs are not intended for a sing-a-long. Hearers just need to soak in what the Spirit is speaking to the church through the lead worshipers. It’s during those long music-only portions that people are encouraged to pray and listen to the Lord. I’m always amazed at how much God speaks, and all we have to do is listen. Of course, these type songs can’t really be duplicated, or even recommended for a set list. What I would recommend to any worship team is to allow creativity through the musicians, and allow the Holy Spirit to move through the music whether in instrument or voice.

Overall, this is a really good live album. Radiant Worship has a reputation of bringing the presence of God to their gatherings. The musicianship is top notch, the vocals are powerful, and Richy Clark has a way of allowing God to speak through him at their gatherings. Musically, I’m not sure how many worship bands can duplicate the musicianship in Radiant Worship since they are incredibly talented. However, I would encourage any worship team to use the songs that speak to the heart of their local congregation, and use their creativity to express the message in the songs.

Sabbaths: Cycles of Rest

Over the past few weeks, I have been diving into the scriptures about what it really means to enter the Lord’s rest. Many may believe it has to do with “resting” after we die and we are in the Lord’s presence, or it has to do with allowing the Lord to be our comfort in difficult times. Both are reasonable but I believe the scriptures reveal a much deeper teaching. I found that God wants us to enter His rest NOW while we are living so we may experience His kingdom in this life; right here, right now. My reading mainly centered around a word search of “Sabbath.” Since one of the 10 commandments is “Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8), I’m compelled to ask the burning questions:

* What does Sabbath mean?

* Why was it so important to God?

* How did God instruct people how to honor it?

* Is the Hebrew Sabbath for all people?

* Why should we observe it?

* How Christians honor the Sabbath?

* Does the day matter?

* How can we enter the Lord’s rest today?

****************

WHAT DOES SABBATH MEAN?

Sabbath literally means, “to cease” in Hebrew. When God explained it to the Israelites, he instructed them to observe the day of rest just as God rested from all his work at creation. Upon reading the scriptures concerning Sabbath, we’ll find the Sabbath rests are in cycles. There are Sabbath days (weekly cycle), Sabbath months (monthly cycle), Sabbath years (yearly cycle), and Seventh-year Sabbaths (7-year cycle).

WHY WAS SABBATH IMPORTANT TO GOD?

Sabbath rests were so important to God for several reasons:

1. He set the example at creation when he rested on the 7th day (Genesis 2:2)

2. He taught the Israelites about the Sabbath BEFORE he etched the 10 commandments in stone by his own hand on Mount Sinai. (Exodus 16)

3. He listed it among his top commandments (Exodus 20)

4. Desecrating it was punishable by death (Exodus 31)

5. He likens it to honoring your parents (Leviticus 19:3)

6. He called it a “day of sacred assembly” (Leviticus 23:3)

7. He listed among reverence for His sanctuary (Leviticus 19:30)

8. He established the Sabbaths among the feasts (Exodus 23:14-19)

9. It is a sign between God and his people that HE makes them holy (Exodus 31:12-18)

The ONLY time I’ve seen in scripture when God detests the Sabbaths is when people refuse to learn to do what is right. He wants us to seek justice, defend the oppressed (or correct the oppressor), take up the cause of the fatherless, and plead the case of the widow (Isaiah 1). If our observation of the “rest” overrides caring for people who desperately need our mercy/compassion/help, we dishonor God. As Jesus explained to the Pharisees, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. Doing “good” means binding the wounds of the broken, setting captives free, feeding the hungry, etc (Matthew 12:9-14 & Isaiah 58).

IS THE HEBREW SABBATH FOR ALL PEOPLE?

When God instructed the Israelites to cease from their work on the Sabbath, he also instructed them to allow their servants (even the foreigners among them) to rest as well (Ex 23:10-13). In other words, rest is rest. It means we rest, and we also refrain from making someone else work in our place. Sabbath rest is for everyone. Paul even continued in the Sabbath rest, and encouraged everyone to observe the Sabbath rest as well (Hebrews 4). He also encourages new believers in Colossians 2:16-23, to not allow anyone to judge them by what they eat, drink, or observing festivals. Worldly rules will perish, but God’s rules remain forever. So as believers, we should be very interested in following God’s rules because the reality is found in Christ because he is Lord of the Sabbath (Matt 12:1-13).

WHY SHOULD WE OBSERVE IT?

According to God’s spoken words, honoring the Sabbath brings tremendous blessings. First of all, he established the Sabbath day as a sign between him and his people that He makes them holy (Exodus 31:12-18). God even promises to bring us, the foreigners who bind ourselves to him, to his holy mountain and give us joy in his house of prayer (Isaiah 56). That is pretty good incentive for me!

There are also many benefits to explain why we should honor the Sabbath:

1. Our Sabbath days are also times to be refreshed in God’s presence.

2. Honoring the days of rests, gives us strength for long journeys ahead.

3. We learn to trust God’s provision more, just as God provided two days worth of food for the Israelites in the desert.

4. It changes our mindset that we must do lots of things NOW. It takes us out of the “get things done” rat race that is so rampant in our culture.

5. Our assemblies become more focused on him because we need not worry about doing any work that day.

6. God richly blesses those who keep them holy!

HOW DID GOD INSTRUCT PEOPLE HOW TO HONOR IT?

God prescribes several cycles of Sabbath rest. Most people are familiar with the weekly Sabbath rest. We rest on the 7th day because God rested on the 7th day at creation. That’s mainly understood. God also prescribed monthly Sabbaths, yearly Sabbaths, and Seventh-year sabbaths. These Sabbath rests can be seen among the feasts the Lord taught the Israelites. The Seventh-year rest is confusing to most people. From an agricultural perspective, it makes perfect sense. Farmers give the land rest in the seventh year so the land has a full year to replenish nutrients in the soil. If farmers had multiple fields, they rotated the fields so each field has a year of rest in the seventh year, and they can still maintain their crops for food. There is much more to be said about how God instructed his people to observe the Sabbaths. If you would like more reading on the subject, check out The Meaning of Sabbath at Bible.org, or read the scriptures for yourself to learn about the all the Sabbath cycles.

HOW SHOULD CHRISITANS HONOR THE SABBATH?

I believe anyone who is bound to the Lord should observe the Sabbath as God prescribed. Of course, we need discernment between what God our Father desires of our Sabbath and what man has changed over the years. We should carefully go through the scriptures and seek God’s ways. Jesus said that if we love him, we would keep his commands. His “commands” are the laws given to Moses. We know this because James stated at the council at Jerusalem that “the law of Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath” (Acts 15:21). So when we ask how should we honor the Sabbath, we must read what God says in the OT. Following God’s laws give us freedom. Jesus said “my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). So, Sabbath rest should not be viewed as a heavy yoke. It is a prescription to be refreshed in the Lord’s presence.

DOES THE DAY MATTER?

Quite honestly, I cannot provide a solid answer. The part of me that says, “Yes” believes it must be on the same day as what God instructed the Israelites. The Israelites were on God’s calendar, which means the Sabbath day is the last day of the Hebrew week (that is Saturday for us under the Gregorian calendar). We should desire to be on God’s calendar since he explains his “appointed times” in scripture in lots of places. The part of me that says “No” wants to believe that as long as we have a consistent day of rest, we are within God’s law. However, I have not found anything in scripture that has changed what day the “Sabbath day” is on. So, I would error on the side of observing Sabbath on Saturday because it is most consistent with what God prescribes in scripture.

HOW CAN WE ENTER THE LORD’S REST TODAY?

As we love the Lord with all our hearts, minds, souls and strength, He will show us the way. Loving Christ means following HIS law. Again, his law brings us REST not a burden, for King David wrote, “The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom, and their tongues speak what is just. The law of their God is in their hearts; their feet do not slip” (Psalm 37:30-31), and they will inherit the land (Psalm 37:29). Paul even stated, “For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous” (Romans 2:13). Entering the Lord’s rest begins by loving him so much that his law is written on our hearts, and our desire is to obey them because it honors God our Father. Part of that law is keeping the Sabbath holy. When we keep the Sabbath holy as God instructs us, we are thus in his rest!

****************

As I stated before, this has come from weeks of reading scripture and prayer. We must earnestly seek the Lord for his ways. So much of scripture has been distorted over the years that many people do not know the true way. To keep our feet from slipping, we must ask God to write his law on our hearts just like he wrote them in stone on Mount Sinai, and follow them with every fiber in our being. We must seek God’s heart and ask him to help us remain mindful of those who need mercy. May the Lord reveal himself to us, and show us his way so that we may be considered righteous in his eyes.

Sunday SetList - June 12, 2011

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Praise God I did today!! This morning was pretty powerful. I’m still overwhelmed by the unity in the place as we seek God’s heart, and pray for a revival starting with us.

The music opened things up with:

With Everything

Our God is Love

You Are Good

During “You Are Good,” our worship leader opened up the congregation to cry out to God, listen for his voice, and share what they are hearing from God. Two men spoke up and prayed as if God is speaking to us saying, “Draw near to me!” People shouted in agreement, and the unity in the place was amazing. Unity like that can only come from the Holy Spirit!!

The band closed out the set list with "Greatest Gift", and the pastor continued in our worship by speaking from Acts 3 and 4. The question he asked from this passage is “What did Peter have to give the crippled beggar?” The answer came down to being with Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, and giving the man freedom from his illness that kept him bound since birth. Of course, the healing came from Christ through Peter. Our pastor calls this "compulsive faith." When we are compelled (sometimes against our will) to speak of God's salvation, we are developing a godly compulsion in our faith. At the end of the meeting, our pastor had everyone read the prayer of Peter’s in Acts 4:29-30 together in our own speed, each making it a personal prayer. Even though it sounded jumbled since people spoke from different bible versions and different speeds, it was awesome to experience the unity in spirit. We, as a congregation, are seeking God to reveal more of himself to us, so that we may have the boldness to speak of what we hear and see from him. Amen and praise the Lord!!!

Sunday Setlist - May 29, 2011

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; through the Sunday Setlists. All praise to our Lord and King!

Today was another great Sunday at Kernersville Community Church!! Full disclosure here: I was not in the main worship gathering today because I was in the classroom of our 4-6 year olds. So, I have two perspectives to offer: one from the children’s area and the other from my husband who filled me in on what happened in our main worship gathering.

In the kids area, it started off kind of rough. All the children wanted to play with the same toys, but none wanted to share. Tears were shed, cries went out to mommies, and us teachers needed prayer! :-) So, I approached one of our ushers and asked him to get one of the mommies and to pray for peace over our classroom. When I returned to the class, we sat the kids down and asked them to pray. We prayed for whatever they wanted to pray about no matter what. The kids also prayed for peace, and the entire room settled down. The rest of the day was wonderful. Thank you, Lord, for the peace that passes all understanding!

In our main worship gathering, we have some exciting news. A gentleman in our congregation was healed of his brain tumor!! The prayer team got word earlier in the week that scans came back clear. Today, our pastor passed around copies of two scans; before and after. The first scan showed the large brain tumor, and the other showed none. Our pastor then explained that the doctors admitted this is a miracle. So, we have reason to celebrate here because our God heals even today!!! We continue to pray for additional healing among us.

As for the songs, here is what we sung:

Holy Are You, Lord

Run

Yes and Amen

Awakening

Our Lord continues to speak to us in our gatherings, and we expect to see more of His miracles and wonders so that we may be witnesses to what we see and hear of the Holy Spirit. Lord, may your kingdom come and your will be done. AMEN!

Sunday SetList - May 15, 2011

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; at TheWorshipCommunity.com. Our worship meetings have been powerful lately, so I want to document what God is doing as we gather in His name, and share it with you. It's incredible to see what God is doing through individuals in the church as well as in our small town. My God is an AWESOME God!!

Furious (by Jeremy Riddle) – A

You Are Good (by Bethel Church) – E (NOTE: Corrected artist)

Worthy, You Are Worthy (by Matt Redman)– B

I Exalt Thee (traditional – chorus only) – B

Rivers (by Eric Hurtgen) – E
Forever (by Chris Tomlin - B

(Note: Our team normally does not play exactly like the recordings. Every song is an arrangement from our band.)

This week, we did not have a drummer. The only instrumentation was 2 electric guitars, acoustic guitar, bass, keys/organ, and two vocals. Even though we did not have the rhythm of the drums, worship was amazing! After the music portion, our pastor made an observation that resonated with me. He said, “An amazing thing happens during our worship. As we ascribe to how worthy God our Father is to us, all of a sudden there is a realization of our value to God.” So true! The worship continued as our pastor gave the message. At the end of the message, the pastor welcomed our elementary school children who have been learning and praying about prophecy. The children shared what they heard from God and prayed over people who needed healing. I was amazed at the response from the number of adults coming forward seeking the healing prayers of the children in our church.

I love how the Lord also speaks to our children. It's a beautiful thing!

First Community Songwriting Day

Spring 2010 Songwriting Day

May 14, 2010 at Kernersville Community Church

Our day started off with a meet and greet where everyone got to know each other, then we went into a vision sharing moment. The vision behind the community songwriting days is to connect local congregations fostering an environment of writing worship music that comes from the heart of God through the local churches. Our prayer is that these events lead into deeper connections between local congregations where other visions are planted to bring denominations together in a collaborative effort. The first seed was planted on this first day of songwriting. We pray that God will breathe on it, and give life to the vision he inspired.

Passages: Romans 5:1-5 and Psalm 43

When we walked into the building, a bible was already opened up on the foyer table. My eyes were drawn to Romans 5:1-5. Here, Paul encourages the church to rejoice in their sufferings because their sufferings will lead to perseverance, which will lead to character, which will lead to hope. The hope that develops never disappoints because that hope comes from God alone. So, the group connected with the hope theme, and began looking at other verses about hope. Psalm 43 resonated with the group. We then discussed how King David was very raw in his expressions to God. David expressed his deepest struggle and still praised God despite his deepest struggles.

Musically, the idea was proposed to make the verses in a minor key to express the raw struggles we all face, and make the chorus major to express the hope we have. One person suggested a chord progression that had that raw feel we were looking for. Then another guitar player continued into a major chord progression for the chorus, which fit quite nicely.

As the musicians played, the singers sang what came to mind expressing the hope we have. Some phrases work, and some did not. So, we recorded the ideas from two musicians, uploaded to a collaboration website, and the group will go back later and upload tracks that come to mind as we work on the song individually.

Overall, it was a really good day. The group’s unity led to some effective songwriting. Even though we did not complete a song, it was still productive. As a group, we agreed to begin using Kompoz.com to construct the song outside the songwriting events. We also agreed to meet once a season to keep the momentum going. Our prayer is for other congregations to see the value in these songwriting events, and join in on what God is doing through worship songwriting in the North Carolina Triad region.

Six “Pure Praise” Take-Aways

I recently completed an online study with some folks over at theworshipcommunity.com. The study is called "Pure Praise" written by Dwayne Moore. During this nine-week study, the Lord moved my heart in some powerful ways! Admittedly, I am not currently a part of a worship team. The reason why I decided to join the study is because I heard so many good things about it, and I also heard it applies to congregant worshipers. Indeed it does! The title of “Pure Praise” is so appropriate. Even church attendees can benefit from this study, and that’s where I got the most out of it - from that perspective. My desire is to please the Lord and one way of doing that is ensuring my praise is pure before Him! With that said, here are my 6 noteworthy take-aways from the study.

1. The Daily Praise/Daily Surrender portions were very effective to me. I was daily reminded to remain focused on my praise for the Lord (even those elements of praise I still consider uncomfortable), and encouraged to allow the Lord to reveal those deep, dark crevices in my spirit where I need to seek his forgiveness and recalibrate my thinking.

2. My spirit desires more physical worship, but my flesh likes to put up a fight. Although physical worship is very biblical (throughout all of scripture), I’m still uncomfortable with certain expressions. Clapping and raising hands are no big deal, but I still struggle with the others to varying degrees. So, I’ve opened myself up more to the Lord in this area. I’m still maturing.

3. I love the anchor story of Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20:1-30. There is so much praise and worship in that one story! No wonder Dwayne Moore centered the study on that one amazing event! I’m still impressed with how much about praise and worship we can draw from 30 verses that demonstrate obedience, faith, and the glory of God!

4. About halfway through the study, Moore encouraged participants to listen to the Lord’s voice more. The Lord gave me more than I expected! I heard the Lord speak to me in ways he never has before. My life is more centered on his ways, his timing, and his authority. Glory to his name!

5. The Lord revealed to me that my “awe” of him remains somewhat superficial. There remains a degree of mysticism in my worship. I want to see more of God so that I may revere him, as I should. He is King over all the earth!

6. The mountain analogy throughout the study seemed so appropriate to me. By the end of the study, I felt tired and frustrated. The very last week about finishing strong allowed me to breathe easy as I continue on my journey in a much better stride. Time will tell how the Lord uses this study through me for his kingdom.

I pray the Lord will use what I have learned, and help me apply it in a manner holy and acceptable to Him. If anyone is interested in developing a pure praise for the Lord whose love endures forever, this study is a MUST. Thank you, Dwayne Moore, for being sensitive to the Holy Spirit while writing this study. I’m truly blessed! Blessings to you and your family!

REVIEW: "Come Away" By Jesus Culture

Jesus Culture’s “Come Away” Live CD debuts worldwide on November 23, 2010. I must admit Jesus Culture intrigues me. Their music is not the standard verse-chorus-bridge-guitar solo-chorus format. They intend for their music to invite others to join them in a time of worship and adoration for the Savior, which means they repeat choruses and bridges several times as the crowd joins them. At first listen, I was drawn in. Live albums help in that aspect because listeners easily connect with the crowd in those recordings. Jesus Culture has an uncanny ability of inviting the crowd into their personal worship time as evidenced by how they lead spontaneous worship.

Every song has “crowd participation.” The band backs down so the crowd is welcome to sing louder than the lead vocal on stage. When this happens, it’s a beautiful sound. Although the bridges and choruses repeat often, the dynamics change enough to avoid needless repetition in a live recording. The songs are longer than usual recordings due to the live nature, yet this simply means there is more music to love and worship with.

Are these songs usable for any congregation? Absolutely! In reality, any Jesus Culture song is adaptable for congregational singing. Their songs are designed that way. My personal favorites on this album are “Rooftops”, “You Are My Passion”, “My Soul Longs For You”, “Let It Rain”, “Show Me Your Glory”, and “One Thing Remains.” Every melody flows smooth enough that an average acoustic guitar player can choose a song, and arrange a “camp fire” worship time.

The song order seems intentional, which is not surprising to me. “Come Away” begins the album from the perspective of the Father inviting his children to join Him in life together. From there, the songs move into surrender, proclamation, adoration, longing for the Spirit, and faith in the moving of the Holy Spirit. The album concludes with “One Thing Remains” which is a perfect example of spontaneous worship. Half way through the song, the band and vocals cut out completely, and the crowd keeps singing and clapping. After a few bars of crowd-only music, the band’s drummer joins the crowd with the kick drum. One by one, musicians join in, and the full band continues the song in a powerful chorus.

Spontaneous worship, when done effectively is very powerful. Jesus Culture sets an amazing example of spontaneous worship for other worship bands. “Come Away” is yet another amazing live recording from Jesus Culture that will not disappoint. The following is a song-by-song breakdown of the album:

******************************************************

1. “Come Away”

* Great opening song seeking people to open their hearts to God, and allow Him to move.

* A message from the Lord to his children, encouraging them to draw near

* High energy; starts off light then builds its energy through the choruses

2. “Rooftops”

* A great song of surrender. It acknowledges the greatness of God and futility of man.

* The band lightens up for a sort of response time during the bridge then leads into a powerful chorus and an equally powerful bridge.

* The song ends with vocals only; the crowd sings along which draws the listener to worship with them. Very well done!

* RECOMMEND FOR SETLISTS

3. “You Are My Passion”

* High energy from beginning to end

* Song about the desire to know Jesus more

* The ending of the song cuts down while the crowd sings in the vocals place

* RECOMMEND FOR SETLISTS

4. “I Want to Know You”

* Starts somewhat subdued, and builds to a powerful chorus

* Sounds like a few hooks put into one song. Does not have the typical verse-chorus format

* I love the chorus, “I want to know you, let your spirit overwhelm me; let your presence overtake my heart.”

* Takes a while to get to the title phrase since the other phrases repeat several times

* The vocalist backs out, and the crowd sings in his place; always beautiful

5. “My Soul Longs For You”

* Great song! The guitar hook matches the lyric hook, which makes it very distinctive.

* Song breaks into two melodies one for male voice and one for female voice.

* Has an unconventional format; sounds like 4 phrases each repeat several times. That may be the intention of the song to keep the format unconventional for the sake of encouraging worship and praise in a spontaneous way.

* Has a spontaneous worship moment after 5 minutes into the song

* RECOMMEND FOR SETLISTS

6. “Freedom Reigns”

* Starts off soft with vocals and percussion, and builds throughout the song

* Unconventional song format

* Has a very strong chorus

7. “Let It Rain”

* This song must be very familiar to the people in the live venue. The crowd sang immediately as the song began. This is evidence their music is a ministry.

* Inviting the Holy Spirit to open the floodgates of Heaven and pour out on the Lord’s people

* Towards the end of the song, the vocals back out while the crowd sings. After a few bars, the worship leader prays over the crowd.

* RECOMMEND FOR SETLISTS

8. “Mighty Breath of God”

* Starts off soft and then builds

* Has a strong bridge then softens to allow spontaneous worship with the crowd

* I can imagine this as a “campfire song” with acoustic guitar only

* RECOMMEND FOR SETLISTS

9. “Show Me Your Glory”

* Begins soft and builds to powerful chorus

* Has several dynamic changes between light and powerful

* The end of the song, yet again, drops the vocals out where the crowd is easily heard. Beautiful.

* RECOMMEND FOR SETLISTS

10. “One Thing Remains”

* I love the chorus, “Your love never fails; never gives up; never runs out on me”

* Great closing song because it sums up the Lord’s promises to us

* About half way through the song, the band stops but the crowd keeps going (singing and clapping). The drummer keeps the beat with the kick, and one-by-one each musician comes in adding another layer to the song. Without missing a beat, the vocalist comes in at just the right cue.

* RECOMMEND FOR SETLISTS

******************************************************

Overall: Every song has repeated choruses or bridges. Given the venue and the purpose of Jesus Culture’s ministry, it’s rather expected. Since this is a live album, the shortest song is around 6 minutes (because of the repeated phrases). The entire live recording is high energy, perfect for younger venues. The style of the music seems much like U2 to me with heavy delay on the guitars. Plus, there are sections of the songs where Chris Quilala sounds like Bono. I'm not sure if this is the sound Jesus Culture aims for, but it still sounds good. As with all Jesus Culture music, it’s a great resource to encourage the youth of this nation to search for the greater things of God through worship.

For more reviews of this album, visit TheWorshipCommunity.com.
<!-- /* Font Definitions */@font-face {font-family:"Times New Roman"; margin-right: 1em;">
On a typical evening, my family and I rush through dinner because we have some place to go by a certain time. Plus, my eldest son tends to take his time eating his meals so my husband and I normally coax him to eat, which consumes time. The other night, dinner was no ordinary dinner. Out of a goofy mood, we sang at the dinner table. Although I cannot remember the song we sang, I do know it was a children’s song. We had a good laugh at the impromptu dinner singing, and enjoyed the closeness in our family. We are blessed!

Today, I read passages in scripture regarding the Last Supper. One statement jumped off the page! “When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.” This sentence is found both in Matthew 26:30 and Mark 14:26. I never in my life knew Jesus sang! Interesting. This is the only indication in all of scripture (that I know of) that Jesus knew music. Plus, they sang at the dinner table!

Of course, the two moments compare only a little since our family sang out of a goofy nature, and the disciples sang because this was the last meal they were going to have with Jesus for a LONG while. The similarity is the closeness each person at the table had with each other. Just as singing at our dinner table reflected the closeness in our family, singing at Christ’s last supper indicates the closeness they had. How beautiful that moment was!

Just a thought. We normally remain quiet while the band plays a song during communion. The next time we take communion together, shall we sing as we eat the bread and drink the wine (or grape juice)? What would it sound like if we all sang a-cappella as we took communion? My guess would be beautiful.

Personal Worship Time

When I worship at home, I tend to use the same songs in my personal worship time. The songs are not a formula for my personal worship time, but they do reflect how much I want the Holy Spirit to permeate my life and counsel me as I testify to others.

"Heart of Worship" is my always my first. This song always brings me to repentance. I cannot sing this song without tearing up at the phrase, "I'm sorry Lord for the thing I've made it" because how many times have I tried to take the lead in worship when the Holy Spirit should be in that role?

"Hungry" is typically my next song. It is the testimony of my heart. I'm hungry for the Spirit and want Him to fill my life with his presence. Only He can satisfy and heal my soul as I seek his face. I choose to empty myself so that I may be full with Him.

"God of This City" is my heart's battle cry right now. I see multiple denominations (churches practically on every block), and nothing consistently connecting them. I see the Lord's children scattered in the same town. The Lord's children can do better than this. "Greater things have yet to come and greater things are still to be done in this city."

Curiously, do you have songs that you use repetitively in your personal worship time? How have they shaped the way you lead worship?

Building Relationships

For a while now, the Lord reminds me to “build relationships.” I must be honest and forthright here. Sometimes, I struggle with what that actually means. Does it mean to build on new relationships? Is God telling me to reinforce the old ones? How much time should I invest in people’s lives? Who should I approach? What do I do?

Then I read Luke 6:37-38. Jesus said, “Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

This passage spoke to me differently than before. Most people see this passage in the context of unbelievers criticizing believers for telling them they are going to hell if they do not accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. Sadly, many Christians believe that context, and it is simply not true. Here is the truth: Jesus is speaking to his disciples on relationship building in this short passage. “Do not judge” and “Do not condemn” are other ways of saying, “do not base your relationships on presumptions, hearsay, and inconclusive results.” If we choose not to build relationships with others based on cultural differences or personality differences, what good will that do us? We must NEVER find ourselves in a pattern of avoiding people because of differences of culture, personality, opinions, etc. Jesus had dinner with sinners, and went out of his way to talk to a Samaritan woman in a time when Jews and Samaritans were forbidden to communicate to each other. We MUST take the time to spend with people. Cultivate deep spiritual relationships earning the trust of those who normally would not trust you.

The next part is so encouraging! “Give and it will be given to you.” What does this have to do with relationships? Well, it’s kind of obvious! If we are willing to give our time and our resources to people outside of our “friendship circle,” God will bless it. I’m not talking finances here. I speak of trust, honor, and influence with the people we choose to give our time to. Our Lord is sure to reward that behavior with “A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.” WOW!

Jesus also said, “For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Again, when it comes to relationship building, how do we measure relationships? Whatever measure we use, the same measure is used thus for us. So, love unconditionally, forgive unconditionally, give unconditionally, and see what God does!

I want to challenge you today to build relationships outside of your comfort zone. Always take the message of Christ with you. As you live a life pleasing to our Savior, you may very well find you will gain favor from the most unlikely people, and lead them to a life changing decision to follow Jesus Christ! Be encouraged, child of God! You are worth more than all the earth can provide. Therefore, go today and make disciples!

At The Sound of the Bell

The other night, I had a vivid dream. I don’t know how much spiritual significance it has since most (if not all) of my dreams are simply crazy. However, I believe this one has some merit. So, please follow along, and comment if it speaks to you.

******************************************************
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The view was gorgeous as the congregation faced a lake while the stage faced the congregation. That day was gorgeous, too; not a cloud in the sky. There was a roped off area in the lake to the right of the stage where the church does baptisms. In the front-left of the stage, a large bell hung from a strong wooden post. My husband and I did not know the significance of this bell. We were so used to candles, a wooden cross, communion trays, etc as a form of worship, but never a bell. The pastor of this church came up to the stage for invitation time, and explained the purpose of the bell. He said, “If you just made a decision to change the way you are living to follow Christ, we want you to ring this bell. The sound of the bell is an indication someone is new to the Kingdom.” This was HUGE to me. As people prayed, the bell would get everyone’s attention so the entire church could celebrate together and go encourage the person who just rang the bell. I quickly realized the sound of that bell served several purposes. To the one who rang the bell, it was a loud proclamation this person’s life was changed, and it was a sound for help. To the others, the sound of the bell meant it’s time to let out a roar in celebration that another life is free in Christ. It was also the sound that indicated someone’s life needed encouragement because the Christian walk is tough. Seeing an entire church body celebrate together and minister to one another was a blessing to me. How great would it be if the entire church body celebrated at the moment of decision? How encouraging would it be to the new Christ follower that the Church has the new believer’s back? This church knew to rally at the sound of the bell, and I loved witnessing it.

******************************************************

How does this dream speak to you? Lately, I've been seeking an abundance of godly counsel to help me sort through my thoughts and emotions in working through what God is asking me to do. In the process, I am valuing the words of some wise leaders who are encouraging me to move forward in what God is asking of me. My spirit is attentive and I'm willing to learn what I can so I may do the Lord's work effectively. The process of following God's voice is very long and arduous. It is requiring me to daily die to myself, listen to His voice step-by-step, and be patient with His timing. It's not easy, but His rewards are great.

Over the past week (going into this week), God has been confirming that what I hear is from Him. It's a blessing and a challenge all rolled up into one. In one breath, I am excited the Lord revealed to me the vision he gave me a year ago is lining up with what He is doing in His church. Praise God!! In the next breath, I'm thinking I'm gonna need some help to pull this off! :-) So, I'm simply asking the Lord to send me people. Send me people who share the same passion as I do, especially those who are more skilled and trained than me. I need people who not only share the same passion, but also share the same vision. I'm still praying for additional clarity, additional counsel, and additional tools. My journey is step-by-step with the Father.

To set the record straight, I have not completely shared my vision on this blog. Until the Lord puts legs to the vision, I'm really not at liberty to share details of the vision. So if you are reading this, please pray for me as I continue in this journey. If you are praying for me, THANK YOU! I highly value encouragement and prayer. I will do my best to update the blog so readers can stay apprised of my journey. In the meantime, God is good all the time!! I'm still praising his name with all that is within me. Blessings to you!

Lessons in Humilty

I’ve always heard the word “humility.” I never knew what it really meant. The word is widely used in the context of valuing others higher than oneself, and rightly so. This week, I am learning its deeper meaning; a willingness to set aside personal goals and desires for the sake of another. In searching the scriptures, I came across Proverbs 6. A father is teaching his son the act of humility. He says,

“My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have struck hands in pledge for another, if you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth, then do this, my son, to free yourself, since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands: Go and humble yourself; press your plea with your neighbor! Allow no sleep to your eyes, no slumber to your eyelids. Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.”

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_vlkpU-8V4OU/TFmiVtaXJfI/AAAAAAAAADo/dVgC7pYXx2w/s1600/PrayingHands.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; The Lord is really working on me so he can refine me. The beginning of that process is humility. It’s more than just saying “Lord, your will be done.” It goes as far as asking me to give up those things that inhibit a growing relationship, even those things I like to do or enjoy having. I’m learning to give up my dreams, and lay down my rights for the sake of cultivating relationships, especially with Jesus. Will the Lord restore those dreams? Possibly. Even if he does not, my life is in Him, which is more than enough to sustain me.

So as I continue walking on God’s path, I must always remember to walk humbly with Him; willing to give up those things that hinder our walk together. He knows what’s best, and always has his eyes on me. Today, “I Surrender” repeats in my head. The words are stronger than ever.

“I Surrender” by Marc James (2000)

I’m giving you my heart, and all that is within

I lay it all down for the sake of you my King

I’m giving you my dreams, I’m laying down my rights

I’m giving up my pride for the promise of new life

And I surrender all to you, all to you

And I surrender all to you, all to you

I’m singing You this song, I’m waiting at the cross

And all the world holds dear, I count it all as loss

For the sake of knowing You for the glory of Your name

To know the lasting joy, even sharing in Your pain

"Image"

The July challenge for The Worship Community songwriters group is based on Colossians 1:15-20. The part that stuck out to me is how all believers are growing more into Christ's image. As the Lord refines us, we grow closer and closer to Christ's image whom is the visible nature of the unseen God. How do we grow into the image of Christ? It all starts with repentance. We must always be humble if we are willing to open our lives up for God to change us. Our hearts must be revived to love like Christ. As our hearts are revived, we are restored. This is a constant cycle until we are all transformed into Christ's perfect image. This process is difficult. It requires a constant refining. This is why believers must be diligent in the process.

"Image" was written by Tom Kline, Melanie Siewert, Mark Snyder, and Earl Reed. This version is the first draft. As we collaborate more on the song, we hope to have it ready for the songwriters group soon. In the meantime, please feel free to share your comments about the song here. In doing so, I would cast out pieces of my vision to see if any stick. Then I began to wonder, isn’t that like cooking spaghetti? Most of the times in a calling, God has us sit and wait while the calling “cooks.” How do we test the spaghetti to see if it’s done? Take a string and throw it up against the wall. If it sticks, it’s ready to serve. Sounds like fun!!!! Over the past two weeks, I’ve been casting glimpses into my vision to various people to see what kind of reaction I would get (ie. see if it sticks). The responses have been mind blowing. People seem like they would be on board with it, and many have shown encouragement toward that vision with some even offering some very useful counsel. Although I am eager to grow in this area, circumstances have not yet lent themselves to open doors. I’m at a point where I feel like I am standing still. My only learning/growing is online in my own time with no one around to share my thoughts or struggles. In my personal prayer time, I keep sensing the Lord telling me that my development must occur in a safe and secure place (like the image of a womb). Honestly, this is a very lonely place or me. Out of desperation, I called a friend whom I’ve known for a very long time, but have not communicated with her much over the past few years. Our conversation was anointed. I felt the presence of God in her words as she gave me practical advice on growing in my calling. Here is what I’m learning now:

-- ALWAYS pursue the caller more than the calling. God calls us to various places, some temporary and some permanent. We need to be close enough to hear God’s whisper to know where to go and how to do it. Also, by the time we are where God wants us to be, there will come times where we are overwhelmed and desperately need God again. Developing a habit of pursuing the caller is THE most important trait when moving into the direction of your calling. This spoke to me deeply! Whenever I pursued the calling, I got burned out. When I pursued the caller, he carried me in the direction of his calling. WOW! Right now, I am pursuing God fiercely so he will reveal to me those obstacles that prevent me from doing his will. He will open the doors, and he will give me the connections I need to move in the direction he desires.

-- Obedience is better than sacrifice. When God fulfilled his promise to Abraham to have a son, Abraham was thrilled. He enjoyed raising his son in the ways of the Lord, teaching him all the great things of God. Then, God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son. Abraham obeyed. On the way up the mountain, Abraham told his son what was about to happen. He told his son, God would provide the sacrifice. Abraham’s faith KNEW God would provide the sacrifice even if it meant raising his son from the dead. Comparing this story to God’s calling on my life, I had to ask myself, if God fulfilled his calling within me, am I willing to give it up simply because he asked me to? Am I willing to forsake what I have (even those things I love the most) for the sake of His kingdom? Am I willing to obey no matter the cost? In all truthfulness, this is a struggle for me. I’ve worked so hard doing what God has asked me to do, and forsaking it all is very difficult. However, I realize when in full time ministry, I will certainly find myself at that crossroads. Some opportunity will come along outside my calling, and I have to know whether God is asking me to forsake my calling for this “opportunity,” or if the “opportunity” is a distraction from what God truly wants me to do. With that said, my heart says yes, although it is very tough.

So with all that said, I feel I’m ready to move. I’m praying for open doors. I need the Lord to send me a mentor in the area of His calling for me. I’m praying the finances will be there if I need to attend conferences, seminars, materials, etc. In the meantime, I’m seeking friendship here where I am. Although my friend of many years was there for me when I needed her, she lives far away. I need a good local friend who will walk along side me because, frankly, I need the encouragement. Well, there’s my heart, out in the open, and on the blog. It’s proof-positive I’m still a work in progress as I grow more into the image of God. Blessings!

"Comfort"

I wrote a new song for the month of April for The Worship Community. The song is called "Comfort" and it is based on Isaiah 40. The part of the passage that stuck out to me was how the Lord comforts us. Our sin is forgiven, our suffering because of our sin is done because of what Christ did on the cross, and the same God that created the universe wants to carry me under his arm. What a God I serve!!!

If you would like to join in the collab effort, please feel free to join us in the Worship Community forums. God bless!

TWCSW Apr - "Comfort"
MOST RECENT UPDATE (July 18, 2010): "Comfort" (Take 2 with Sync Tone) It's really been a blessing. Each month, I try to write a song based on predetermined scripture passages from The Worship Community (TWC). I must be honest and say that it is tough. Songwriting is not easy by any stretch. The process becomes a bible study and a time to actively seek God on how the scriptures speak to me as a Christ follower. I must admit that I have written songs since I was in high school, but not too many worship songs. Over the past several months, I have enjoyed learning from other worship arts folks at The Worship Community. These people have insight beyond insight, and I have much to learn from them. Beginning in February 2010, a challenge was offered to songwriters to write a song once a month based on scripture provided. Although I do not consider myself a "songwriter," I thought I might use it as an opportunity to sharpen my songwriting skills especially in praise and worship. I'm finding my biggest challenge in songwriting (aside from coming up with a "hook" melody) is finding the words that present the scriptures in a fresh perspective. It has challenged me to read supporting scriptures, review commentaries, and seek God more on fresh insights into his Word. Songwriting is not easy by any stretch. My prayer is that whatever music the Lord puts on my heart may be used for his glory and encourage others to develop a deeper relationship with Him.

To catch you up to speed, here are the links to the collaborative efforts on the songs. If you are a member of The Worship Community, I encourage you to feel free to post your comments in the thread. If not, please become part of the community so we can all grow and learn together.

Songwriting Rules

March - "Riches of Grace"
February - "Into Your Hands"

A Gift From the Father

Anyone who knows me well, knows it does not take much to bring to me to my knees. So, any form of rebuke, discipline, or challenge, I take seriously and with much prayer (sometimes fasting). Due to a series of events leading up to Christmas, I found myself on my knees once again. The Lord took a few things from me (I don't know whether permanent or temporary), which left me feeling empty. I kept asking the Lord, "how empty do you want me to go? If I need to be completely empty with nothing but you, I'm here." All I wanted at that time was to curl up in Christ's lap, and weep. I repented for sin after sin, and asked God to not allow my sins have any serious consequences. While caring for my children, and doing simple housework throughout the day, I found myself lamenting in song around the house. Imagine that! I've never done that before. Of course, I had to chuckle about it. What if my "laments" became popular like so many other worship songs? I honestly laughed it off. After my kids were in bed, I began to journal on my computer what my mind and my soul were going through. As I was typing (accompanied by weeping), I started lamenting in song again. This time, only words. OK. Now that I had words, what about melody? Suddenly, I heard the Lord say, "Use your first song."

Only God, my husband, and I know about my "first song." The first song I ever wrote was when I was a senior in high school when I was not following Christ. I simply wrote a short 10-measure song experimenting with a minor key signature, a 3/4 time signature, note intervals, and measure ties. That was about 20 years ago, and never intended to be shared. I've always wanted to do something with it, but I could never find the words. For years, I told my husband that the song sounds like it's a lament, and any words in it should reflect its style. When the Lord asked me to use "my first song," I was floored that the words actually fit the melody. It wasn't precise but it was pretty close. I only changed two or three words to make the melody fit better, but the message of my heart remained the same. Needless to say, I was weeping big time by this point. All this time, and NOW my first ever song has words. To add to the tenderness of the moment, I thanked God for taking something old, and making it new again. Then, I heard the Lord say, "This is what I want to do with you," and I saw an image of a beautiful gold plated music box covered with dust. God is blowing the dust off!!! I wept even more, praising Him profusely. Lord, what do you have planned?????

In this tender moment with my Savior, I don't know what God will do with it later. Is it a simple lesson to show me He never forgot that short seemingly insignificant song from so long ago, or does He have a bigger plan with the music that flows out of my heart for Him? I'm still praying for clarity. In the meantime, I still think it's so cool that God took something I crafted such a long time ago, and created something brand new out of it. I love this gift. Not many gifts make me cry with joy. Thank you, Lord!!! You know how to give the best gifts!!

Knowing Christ is truly the greatest gift of all, the Lord still likes giving us gifts unique to our relationship with him. For me at this moment, it was a song. Do you have a story of a unique gift the Lord gave you?

Cultivating a Servant's Heart

One of the top struggles of a worship team is dealing with pride, ego and envy. What can a worship team do to ensure this attitude remains at bay? A while ago, I found worshipteleseminar.com (no longer available) which contained multiple resources valuable to an effective worship team. The site provided multiple seminars dealing with various issues of working with a worship team. Various worship leaders, some well known, called in and provided a 1-hr long seminar on their topic. Every seminar was recorded and provided free to members of the site. WorshipVanguard has every recording and all the seminar notes. The below seminar is by Rory Noland who tackles the issue of pride and ego. Another seminar, later, will specifically deal with envy. So, get your notepad, and listen carefully to the wise words of Rory Noland as he explains how to cultivate a servant's heart even when you are on stage and in the spotlight. God bless.

03-ServantVsStardom sound bite

King David's Original Music

For those who know me well, I love music. I like listening to it, scoring it, analyzing it, arranging it and composing it. Recently, I've been studying King David's music development strategy. Keep in mind, I do not have a music degree so my knowledge is somewhat limited. So, I find what I can by researching using the Internet for nuggets of info that support the subject. In my personal research, I found a site that used note-for-note transcriptions of the Davidic Cipher to produce an audio of how King David actually wrote his psalms. Hearing music as it was written thousands of years ago absolutely amazes me. The people at "The Music of the Bible" has an incredible compilation of David's psalms transcribed for our listening pleasure. Their site not only provides the audio of the songs, but also the original Hebrew, the English translation, and some very good background information on music in the Bible. Feel free to check out the link, and post here what you think of this ancient Hebrew music. As for me, I love this stuff.

Worship Musician Development

In serving with various worship teams over the years, I've observed all had one commonality. All teams had no musician development strategy in place. When I asked worship leaders, "What do you do with the musician who doesn't make the audition cut?" The typical response is that they instruct the musician to keep working hard and audition in the next cycle. Another situation I've dealt with is when the worship team is closed. The same musicians play week in and week out with no "2nd string" musicians. I must be honest, this dismays me. I know more churches today want a talented praise team so the music flows more seamlessly, and a level of excellence is expected out of the musicians. However, what is the church doing to raise up musicians? From what I've observed, most musicians get their training in public schools, private lessons, community orchestras, garage bands, etc. Where is the church among all this?

Does your worship team train musicians? If so, what process do you have? How well does it work? How many leaders make this process possible? How many musicians do they train? What would you suggest other churches focus on to create such a process?

New to the Blogspere!

Hello, anyone who finds this site.
